Arch Cape Creek

Such a beautiful place on the coast! I hope I can give myself another 'residency' like this sometime again. I learned a valuable new technique with acrylics too; use them like oil paint instead of thick watercolors.

Neahkanie Cliff

My problematic horizontal seascape from the other day was painted over, you can see remnants here and there. I`ve been looking at this cliff for a week and finally saw a composition.

Lily

A couple of more days here on the coast and then home. I have two larger paintings in process, one promising, the other non-cooperative.
Judson`s Art Outfitters gave me a nice little plug. They have everything imaginable for plein air painting.

Above the Falls Above the Shore

We were hiking on Neahkanie Mountain the other day and noticed a detour on the trail. I needed to know where it went. A short walk away, we came to a clearing with a view down to the lip of a waterfall dropping to the beach, with the ocean beyond. Spatially, the juxtaposition of the two scenes was really interesting.

Arch Cape Creek Study

This isn't a true plein air painting but it is the view outside the studio here. A lush gentle creek is soon to empty into the ocean. The air is filled with a mist from the waves breaking just around that corner.

Stream to the Sea

Shallow streams flowing into the ocean are everywhere on the Oregon coast. They`re beautiful and kids love them too.

Surf on Second Beach

From 1987.
Today I`m off to the coast to paint seascapes, something I`ve wanted to do for a long time. I need to be there to do it right.

Wet Winter Forest 2

It never seemed quite right. Not enough focus.
Since I`m mostly puttering around my studio before my painting adventure at the coast, I decided to go back in. I think it`s better.
I had an unusual party on Saturday in honor of Carol Marine, a new resident of Oregon having lost everything in the fires last summer near Austin TX. All were artists except John who slowly stepped out of the room when he thought our discussion of glues went on way too long. I was the last to realize it was a gathering to introduce ourselves to each other. I thought my guests were all Carol`s friends. They are now.

Sauvie Island Dusk

A daily painting done from a sketch made in 2001.
I`m at loose ends. Later in the week I`m going to the coast to paint seascapes. I have a place secured with an actual painting studio. I have been wanting to do this for a long time. In the interim, I`m goofing around with small stuff.
That green is mostly Holbein`s Compose Green #2.

Wetlands Morning

This was painted on a new paper by Arches specially formulated for oil paint. I pretty much hate it, like painting a paper towel! I spent way too much time on this piece because my efforts were immediately absorbed into a black hole of fibers. Really disappointing! When I saw it I was excited, I wouldn`t have to gesso it first. Now I think gesso ,with a sealant of acrylic medium, is the only way to make it usable. As a final insult, it`s nearly impossible to photograph.

Seed Pods

I needed to go into Michael`s Craft Store yesterday. Painters are always showing me cool stuff they bought there. This is daunting but I decided I`d explore a little bit. My timidity was justified. Every supply you`d need to make anything at all was available. It was overwhelming and busy! at 9 a.m.! I was also trying to get used to new glasses, a big mistake. I staggered out sort of nauseous with some water soluble graphite pencils and a pad of paper and did this drawing last night.

Winter Copse

Most painters probably experience this occasionally; work that seems clever at the time is sold and later, on review of the photo, looks unresolved and embarrassing. Just as often, a temporary frustration causes me to destroy something that actually had promise. I could fill a gallery with worthy 'lost' paintings. Oh well, I live in the moment in my studio. Here`s an example from last winter that didn`t survive.

Pool at the Base of the Falls-Progression

Having done a study of this subject, I thought it would translate well into a larger oil painting. Only the final photo here was taken properly with the right light [outdoors].
